The glacial meltdown in Himalayas and Karakoram due to global warming will first bring in heavy floods in the river system in South Asia and China followed by drought like conditions. This was stated in the inaugural session of two day International Seminar on ‘Impact of climate change on water resources and glaciers: concerns and challenges’ organised by Department of Earth Sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan.

[2] Scientists call for greater regional cooperation to combat climate change

Climate scientists say regional governments need to include disaster management in their policies for coping with climate change.
The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center and the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are drawing together scientists in Asia to both assess the risk of extreme weather and to find ways to reduce the damage it can cause.

[3] Glacier at source of Yangtze River retreats

The glacier at the source of Yangtze River in China's southwest Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has retreated since 2004, said an official at Qinghai Provincial Center for Remote Sensing.
The glacier is located in the Geladaindong Mountain area in Mongolian-Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Haixi.

[4] Japan studies climate change impacts on Annapurna Region, Nepal

A Japanese professor has started a study on the impacts of climate change on Annapurna region by establishing a station at Khopra, to the south of Mt Annapurna, in Myagdi district.
Meanwhile, Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) has also started a study on the changes in Mt Nilgiri and the surrounding including Chhemo Lake and Dhumba river.

[5] Region shivers as temperature dips

Arctic conditions continued to prevail in the region on Monday with fog blanketing large swathes of land and intermittent rain in most parts plummeting mercury and affecting normal life. The chilling temperatures, though, spread cheer in the hospitality sector as tourists thronged popular destinations on hills, where it snowed for the second day in a row. While most parts of the western Himalayas witnessed scattered to widespread rain or snow, mild drizzle was reported in the northern plains.

[6] Peru's mountain people face fight for survival in a bitter winter

Climate change is bringing freezing temperatures to poor villages where families have long existed on the margins of survival. Now some must choose whether to save the animals that give them a living, or their children.
A consequence is that Quechua-speaking farmers and their families, who have managed to subsist for centuries at high altitude, believe they may not make it through the next southern winter.

[7] Climate report identifies Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal cities at grave risk
December 18, 2009
Khulna, the southern metropolis of Bangladesh, has been identified as one of the 15 most vulnerable cities under climate change impact.
The report 'Climate Change and the Urban Poor: Risk and resilience in 15 of the world's most vulnerable cities' published recently by International Institute for Development and Environment termed 12 cities from Africa and three from South Asia most vulnerable to climate change.
